At open studios this year, a visitor asked, “do you always plan to make landscapes?” Most of the time, I can’t not make landscapes. The two collections in this exhibit explore connection through landscape, both real and imagined.
The paintings in "First Person View” express the connection we experience with others and our environment. Inspired by my teenage son’s drone flights, these paintings sometimes distort traditional perspectives, allowing the gaps between us. Through colors and textures, I aim to evoke the beauty and opportunity in these spaces, encouraging viewers to consider multiple perspectives within a single narrative.
The color fields of the "1000 Series" celebrate California's volcanic landscape, capturing the expansive feeling and the soft interplay of light and color. By layering encaustic medium over base colors, I create a luminous effect that mirrors the centered calm I find in these environments.
My background as a metalsmith and midwife fuels my love for the physicality of encaustic, a medium that lets me layer pigments and wax to build depth and light. Whether clearly defined or suggestively abstract, these landscapes invite you to find your own connections within their vistas.
